How to find your denim fit

Most people buy the wrong jean for one reason: they shop by waist size and hope the rest works out. The waist is the easy part. The fit — how the leg is cut between the hip and the hem — is what decides whether you wear the jean or leave it in the cupboard.

There are only six shapes worth knowing. Learn them once and you never need to guess again.

Slim

Close through the seat and thigh, then straight to the ankle. Not tight — close. This is the safest fit if you are unsure, and it is the one most people already own without knowing what it is called.

Straight

The leg runs one width from the knee down, with no taper. It is the most forgiving fit across body types and the one that works with almost any shoe. If a slim jean feels tight at the calf, this is your answer.

Baggy

Deliberately oversized through the hip and leg, cut long so the hem stacks over the shoe. The mistake people make is sizing up. Do not — buy your true waist and let the cut do the work.

Skinny

Narrow the whole way down. It needs stretch in the fabric to be wearable, so check the composition before you buy a skinny jean anywhere.

Cargo

A utility pocket on a denim body. Rigid cargo breaks in over a few months and holds its shape; stretch cargo moves from the first wear. Both are cut fuller through the thigh than a slim jean.

Bootcut and wide

Fitted to the knee, then released. The only fit that reliably sits over a boot without bunching.

The two-minute method

Take the jean you already own and wear most. Lay it flat, buttoned, and measure straight across the waistband from edge to edge. Double it. That is your waist size in inches — more reliable than measuring your body, because it accounts for where you actually wear your jeans.

Buy your true waist. Choose the fit, not the size.

Then pick the fit from the six above and you are done. Our fit guide walks through both methods with measurements you can check against.
